Melissa Roberts - Violin, Electronics
Melissa Roberts began studying the violin formally at the age of twelve. She spent many years studying with Walter Evich who at the time was a violist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Before attending music school, she worked as a fitness trainer. She also was a professional boxer. She was the first female to win the Detroit Golden Gloves boxing tournament in 1994. Although she has retire from professionally kickboxing, boxing, and martial arts, you can still find her judging local boxing events. If you are really lucky, you may catch her performing "Eye of the Tiger" before main events. Yes, the string quartet plays in the ring. After the death of her one year old son, Melissa decided to go to music school because he loved to hear her play. Her goal is to write the "best song ever in his honor". Her composition, "Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome" is and example of how she uses her traumatic past to compose beautiful works of art.
Melissa has a bachelors in music performance and music education. She has studied privately with Movses Pogossian, Caroline Coade(all are currently with the DSO) and Dr. Laura Roelofs. She has attended master classes and performed for the Shanghai, Degas, Pacifica, and Miami string quartets. Also, she has performed at master classes with Emanuella Boisvert, Jeffery Applegate, Hi Wu, and Marion Tanua of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. She has performed and/or recorded with artists such as Aretha Franklin, Regis Philbman, Pirannahead, Divinity, Sniff Test, Teo Parrish, Blackman, Inos Savad, and many other local artist. The studio is where she is most comfortable. Besides being and educator and teaching privately for over 7 years, Melissa spends a great deal of time composing original works of art. She is most known for her research related to the usage of electronics with traditionally acoustic instruments. Although Melissa spent time playing with regional orchestras in high school, she has no real passion for that type of work now. She prefers small ensemble work and likes to focus on composing instead. |
